The Annexation of Guanacaste to Costa Rica (also known in Spanish as “Anexión de Guanacaste”) is a historic event that references to the incorporation of the territory of the “Partido de Nicoya” (represented by Nicoya, Santa Cruz and Liberia) to Guanacaste, Costa Rica. This celebration takes place as a Costa Rican Holiday, every year on July 25th.
About Costa Rica’s History
The incorporation of the territory of the Partido de Nicoya to the State of Guanacaste happened in 1824. During this time, the Partido de Nicoya had a political relationship to Cartago (Costa Rica’s capital at that time) and a commercial relationship to Puntarenas, among other historical events that their relationships to Costa Rica.
When the opportunity to become independent presented itself, the Partido de Nicoya habitants voted to become part of Costa Rica in light of their close ties with the Country.
There were many factors such as geography, political ties, historical situations, and socio-economic contexts that motivated the decision of these populations.
We are passionate about this Holiday
The Annexation of Guanacaste was a long process that resulted in Costa Rica´s territory as we know it today, and came with a lot of benefits such as increasing the population, culture and becoming an important economy source for the newly formed country.
Last but not least… thanks to the union, Costa Rica now has one of the five Blue Zones of the World, which is why we are very happy to share the kids of our Blue Zone Family in their traditional costume, celebrating the Holiday!
